Recently, news was posed in French on their website. It translates roughly as follows:

After the ordinations of July 4 at St. Anne d'Auray, where Fathers Beaugrand and Raffray were ordained, the seminary has (almost) emptied of its occupants for a well deserved holiday before a sizeable inflow. Indeed, the seminary is entering its fourth year and this means that we open the cycle of theology in September 2009. For the more senior seminarians who have completed their year of spirituality and their two years of philosophy Courtalain will be able to continue their training on site by commencing the study from September of Catholic theology. This is a milestone because it shows that the seminary of St. Vincent de Paul has reached a certain maturity that allows it to provide comprehensive training for future priests.

The venture commenced three years ago when there opened in France a traditional seminary under the auspices of the Institute of the Good Shepherd that we hoped would be successful and that, by the Will of God, we would be able to answer the call of the Pope who recalled the necessity of the seminary in the life of the Church during his catechesis on 19 August:

"Foundations laid during seminary training, are the irreplaceable "spiritual soil", in which we can "learn Christ" by gradually letting ourselves be configured to Him, the one true High Priest and Good Shepherd. Time at the seminary should be regarded as the realization of the moment when the Lord Jesus, after calling the apostles before sending them to preach, granted their request to stay with him (cf. Mk 3 14).

The faculty of the Seminaire St. Vincent has changed this year as l'Abbé Henri Forestier, IBP, having successfully undertaken for three years the heavy task of the foundation of this house, has left the seminary to direct the Little Sisters of the Good Shepherd full time; l'Abbé Yannick Vella leaves the faculty to join the staff of the parish of Saint-Eloi in Bordeaux. We wish to express our gratitude for the work they have completed while at the seminary.

Providence is good. Since l'Abbé Emmanuel Ducla, IBP has been conferred with his licentiate in Canonical and Dogmatic Theology this month, he will begin to teach these subjects to the Fourth Year Seminarians. l'Abbé Leszek Krolikowski will continue to give courses in philosophy and moral theology, in addition to his PhD in philosophy at the Angelicum in Rome. The younger generation of the Institute is will represented by l'Abbé Stefano Carusi who will undertake the teaching of Latin and Greek and Ecclesiastical History. l'Abbé Matthew M. Raffray begins his first year of priesthood by teaching our courses in philosophy and theology.

Finally, I will assume the office of rector of the seminary and undertake particularly the education of first-year seminarians and ensuring the general introduction to Sacred Scripture. We will be aided by some outsiders who transmit their knowledge and apostolic flame, especially l'Abbé Paul Aulagnier through his course on the recent history of the Church.

Seminarians return to Courtalain Saturday, September 19 and will begin the year with a retreat preached by l'Abbé Chanut which will launch the Holy Year of Priests of the Holy Father. Then we receive the fourteen new candidates that come from around the world to increase the Institute of the Good Shepherd. With twenty-seven seminarians, three brothers and five teachers, the house begans to crack at the seams and this presents us with difficulties of all kinds. It is urgent for us to make the investments necessary to accommodate these young people open to God. Also, we are asking for your generosity to give us the means to carry out the noble work of training future priests.

l'Abbé Roch Perrel, IBP
Rector

News from vacations

" L'abbé Hugues Beaugrand from the Institute of the Good Shepherd, young priest newly ordained Burbidge, the young bishop of Raleigh (for he just turned 52 and I could be his older brother), was named Bishop of Raleigh on June 8, 2006, but installed on August 4: the precision is important as you will see....

At the head of a diocese erected in 1924, His Excellency Bishop Burbidge never hid his interest for the extraordinary form of the Mass. He manisfested it clearly as early as July 9, 2007, when he said he was ready to give all his help to those who desired this form of the Mass, then in a more formal way, in a declaration, that sadly doesn't have any date, where he stated, "in order to apply in every possible ways Summorum Pontificum in the diocese of Raleigh, I have the intention (...) to make the Forma Extraordinaria even more accessible to the faithful", greeting at the same time Father Paul Parkerson, parish priest of Sacred Heart in Dunn, who already celebrated the Forma Extraordinaria and who was teaching it to his collegues who expressed the desire to celebrate the Tridentine Mass. Since then, Father Parkerson has become the episcopal delegate for the Forma extraordinaria.

It is thanks to Fr. Parkerson and to the kindness of His Excellency Bishop Burbidge, that l'abbé Beaugrand has asked and received the permission to celebrate the Holy Mass and to preach the homily on Sunday morning, July 26, in Dunn and in the evening in Rocky Mount. Every day of the following week, l'abbé Beaugrand was able to celebrate Mass in various parishes. And, last Sunday, he even was able to celebrate it in the Cathedral of Raleigh, where the Tridentine Mass is only celebrated one Sunday per month. This morning, L'abbé wrote to me that he received a warm welcome everywhere he went. The fact that he celebrated his first Mass in Raleigh has been told around the Diocese (which is 82 000 Km2 and contains 78 parishes) and a number of priests wanted to give the opportunity for their parishioners to hear the Tridentine Mass, as well as to receive the plenary indulgence attached to the first blessing of a newly ordained priest. Isn't it Catholicity?

"His Excellency Bishop Burbidge," continues the abbé, "is a bishop who wants many priests" ( there are only 100 priests in Raleigh for about 200 000 Catholics). " Last night ( August 3rd) , the bishop invited seminarians and futur candidates to the priesthood to a baseball match. He also invited me to show the youth what is the priesthood friendship. It was a beautiful and joyful evening, very touching because of Bishop Burbidge's generosity and the attention he gave to each (...) He thanked me for the joy and the happy disposition I shared with his priests (...).Today (August 4th), Bishop Burbidge is going to bless the statue of the Saint Curé of Ars which is going to go around the diocese during the Priestly Year - a day concuring with the 'dies natalis' of Saint John Mary Vianney and the third anniversary of Bishop Burbidge's episcopal ordination. I am invited (to the Mass)."

This event is taking place right now while I am writing this paper since it is 6:34 PM in Paris and 12:34 PM in Raleigh: the Mass in memory of Saint John Mary Vianney in theCathedral of Raleigh was starting at noon.

I hope l'abbé Beaugrand will be able to tell us more."

Ordinations 4th july 2009. These two new ordained are bretons : Fr Beaugrand from Vannes in Morbihan and Fr Raffray from Erquy in Côtes d'Armor. Arbishop Appignanesi ordained them. they will never forget this arbishop not only because of ordination but about his caracter and the testmony he gave them.

The Basilica was built to honour St. Anne, the patroness of Brittany, who appeared to Yves Nicolazic during the years 1624-5. The apparitions were approved by the Local Ordinary and pilgrimages, known locally as pardons began. The Basilica was particularly favoured by Queen Anne of Austria and her husband, Louis XIII, especially by the donation of a relic of the Saint brought from the Holy Land during the Crusades, and the sponsorship of the erection of a Confraternity of St. Anne there. The miraculous statue of St. Anne was publicly burnt at Vannes during the Revolution. The Shrine continued to be popular in spite of athiestical machinations and reached its zenith during the reign of Blessed Pius IX, who raised to Confraternity to an Archconfraternity, commanded the image of St. Anne to be crowned, once the new Basilica, begun in 1866, was complete, and donated the High Altar.

C'est notre mère à tous;

mort ou vivant, dit-on,

A Sainte-Anne, une fois,

doit aller tout Breton.

http://tradvocations.blogspot.com/2009/07/sacerdotal-ordinations-for-institute-of.html

Thanks to Traditional Vocations blog

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://instituteofthegoodshepherd.blogspot.com/2009/08/ordinations-4th-july-2009-two-more.html' title='Ordinations 4th july 2009. The Bretons of Rome were renowned for their legal knowledge, in the footsteps of their Patron Saint Yves. Thus they were honoured with defining titles, which figure on the pedestals of the various busts of Bretons canons lining the cloister of Saint Louis the French:famosissimus utriusque iuris doctor ;licentiatus in decretis (scholar of law) ; artium magister et sacrarum litterarum formato baccallario ; iure civili et pontificio ; bonarumque artium perito.

Many positions in the Roman Curia were held by Bretons, such as those of procurators, secretaries to the Apostolic Palace, notaries to the Holy See… Amongst these Bretons, clerics and of noble birth, Alain de Coëtivy, born in 1407 at Plounéventer in Léon, was appointed cardinal in 1474.

It is strongly believed that he drew a large number of his compatriots to the Eternal City. He is buried in the Church of Saint Praxedis. The monument erected to him is one of the most beautiful of the 15th century, representing him recumbent in his pontifical vestments. His cousin, Gabriel du Chastel, bishop of Uzès, is buried in the same place.

Through the support of Cardinal Alain de Coëtivy, the Bretons of Rome obtained a church: “Long before the unification of Brittany with France through the marriage of Louis XI with Anne of Brittany, Pope Callixtus III issued a bull in 1455, granting the Church of Sant' Andrea dei Mormorariis, built in the 12th century, to the Bretons of Rome”. This was a very old church, whose patron Saint Andrew of Montarariis, under Saint Lawrence in Lucina, became Saint Yves of the Bretons.

The Church of Saint Yves of the Bretons was commissioned by Pope Nicholas V. A small church built in the 12th century, it was situated in the heart of Rome, between the Via della Scrofa and the Via della Campana, close to Saint Louis the French and Navona Square. The lunette of the portico in the ruelle de la Vicolo della Campana represented the Virgin and Child, flanked by Saint Yves and Saint Bernard, works by the Della Robbias. Inside, the church was constructed like a basilica, with a shallow apse and three naves separated by eight ancient granite pillars, bearing ancient capitals. These pillars supported eight vaulted arches.

The armorial bearings of France and Brittany were painted on the coffered wooden ceiling, together with the number of Louis XIV. The forecourt was an elegant mosaic of colour. Numerous tombstones, with effigies of the deceased and coats of arms, and a large number of other engraved memories, told the history of notable figures of Brittany and other countries.

The author of Buonarrotis article, Monti, dates the Church of Saint Yves and its bell tower, now disappeared, around the 8th or 9th century. After its transfer, solemnly confirmed by Calixtus III in 1455, the church became a parish.

In 1511, Pope Julius II erected near and annexed to St Yves, a hospital for the Breton poor, sick and pilgrims. But under Pope Gregory XIII, at the request of King Henri III of France, this establishment was closed down and the buildings given to Saint Louis the French.

The Church of Saint Yves, the oldest and most interesting archeologically, was destroyed in 1875. Why? Some claim that its state of disrepair meant that it could no longer be kept, others that France, the administrator of the property, destroyed it following the extension of neighbouring houses to gain space. Relations between France and Brittany were fairly tense at that time. The new church, smaller, is intended to seal the memory of the former church.

The new church is fairly small, with a Renaissance-style facade. It is a beautiful work by the architect Garimini. The square door, flanked by two pillars, opens onto a deep arching (curve of a vault), carved at a right angle into the wall, which encloses an arched tympanum resting on two pillar. This tympanum is adorned with a varnished terracotta statue of the Virgin and two saints. Two shell-based niches garnish the bottom of the wall on both sides of the door, and higher, at the level of the curve of the arching, are two shields with the ermines of Brittany.

An upper level, above a moulding, is pierced by a circular oculus garnished by mullioned window panes at right angles to each other, and decorated by two niches with triangular pediments. A gable surrounded by a moulding gives a finishing touch to this facade, painted in ash grey. The following dedication has been transcribed: DEO SACRUM IN HON. S. IVONIS PRESB. ADVOCATI PAUPERUM.

Sadly, the church is seldom used today, at the very most once a month. This is not due to the lack of Bretons in Rome (there are about twenty seminarians and student priests), but more to the small size of the new church, which can only hold about fifty people.

Evid Doué ha Breizh

Fr Hugues Beaugrand

Who are we ?

"I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me”

Like known as so deeply Good Shepherd Himself: “I am the good shepherd; and I know mine, and mine know me”. This divine communion with our divine Master, founded on the communication of the goods, the reciprocity in knowledge and the benevolence, in short on a true friendship - “I will not call you any more my servants… but my friends” -, first of all concerns the members priests of our Institute. But because the Christ-Lord sends his priests towards you, faithful or not, as the Father sent it towards us all, it is right that this reciprocal knowledge of Shepherd and the sheep passes through these friends whom It chose of any eternity. This is why, known as the Apostle, “we discharge an embassy near you” and our burning desire will be always to communicate to you the hope founded on this sureminent science of Jesus-Christ. The Institute of Good Shepherd is initially and will remain always the body of this paramount mission: “To spread among the nations the good odor of Jesus-Christ”. But because these are difficult times, because the charity of the great number cooled and because “the men do not support any more the healthy doctrines”, we will need sometimes, by preaching the word, “to insist in time and with against time to convince, beg, begin again”. We will always do it “in all patience and with the concern of informing”. The polemic is not our taste, we prefer the doctrinal defense of the traditional faith to him, that which gets the eternal life. Makes soft Providence which we are free of the traps of the dialectical one ; how its Light and its Kindness maintain serene to us with this mission, for the honor of God and Jesus Christ!

Father Philippe Laguérie +
